This Chocolate Malted Milkshake is super thick, incredibly creamy, and deliciously rich! Best of all, it can be made at home with only 4 ingredients.

Ever find yourself craving an old-fashioned, diner-style Malted Milkshake? Regular homemade milkshakes are great, but some hot summer days really call for a malt, and nothing else will do.

The great thing is that malted milkshakes are just as easy to make at home as a regular milkshake. You just need one extra ingredient.

What is a malted milkshake?

Malted milkshakes are simply milkshakes with malted milk powder added in. That’s it. The addition of the malted milk powder makes the shakes extra rich and creamy and also helps enhance the flavors of the shake.

What is malt?

Malt is a grain, typically barley, that has undergone a special germination and heating process which converts the starches into sugars, giving the malt its naturally sweet taste. Malt is often used in beer and whiskey as well as baked goods, candy, and malted milk drinks.

Malted milk powder is made from malt, wheat, milk, and salt. When added to milkshakes, candy, and baked desserts, it helps bring out the richness of the flavors in these sweets.

Ingredients for a malted milkshake.

Ingredient Notes

  • Malted Milk Powder: You can usually find malted milk powder at your local grocery store in the baking aisle or grab it online.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: I recommend using high-quality ice cream for the best results. You can also use chocolate ice cream if that is what you have on hand.
  • Milk: You can use any milk for this recipe. The higher the percentage of milk fat, the richer your shake will be. You can even substitute a little bit of half and half or heavy cream for some milk if you want your milkshake to be extra rich and creamy.
  • Chocolate Syrup or Fudge Sauce: You can use either homemade fudge sauce or store-bought.

How to Make a Malted Milkshake at Home

1. Combine milk and malted milk powder in your blender.

2. Pulse your blender 3-5 times until the powder is mostly mixed into the milk.

3. Add the ice cream and chocolate sauce to the blender and blend until combined.

4. Serve with your favorite toppings and additional whipped cream and sprinkles, and enjoy!

Variations

You can turn any of my milkshake recipes into malts by adding ¼ cup of malted milk powder to the blender. Here are some good places to start:

  • Vanilla malted milkshake: Omit the fudge sauce, and add the scraped seeds from ½ vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract.
  • Strawberry malted milkshake: Omit the fudge sauce, and add ¾ cup chopped hulled strawberries (fresh or frozen) and an optional 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar.
  • Oreo malted milkshake: Keep or omit the fudge sauce, and add 4 Oreos to the blender. Crumble an additional Oreo over the top when serving.
