This healthy ham and potato soup is pure comfort food in a bowl. Easy, fast, and low-calorie, it’s one of my favorite busy weeknight meals.
The photos in this post have been updated. Don’t worry. You’re in the right place. 😉
Have you seen that Campbell’s soup commercial with the sick guy lying on his couch trying to get his partner to make him soup?
He tells her that his mom always used to make some for him when he wasn’t feeling well, and for a moment, it looks like she’s going to do it, but instead she just throws a phone at him, tells him to call him mom, and leaves him to wallow.
I laugh SO hard, every single time I see that commercial, and I have no idea why, because I’m totally that person who makes soup for sick people. Feeling sick? Here, let me bring you some soup. And if I’m bringing soup, I’m probably bringing this one.
Like my Peasant Chicken Soup, this surprisingly healthy Ham and Potato Soup is another of the early recipes I learned in college. It saw me and my friends through many an illness and late-night study session.
It’s perfect for what ails you because it’s pure comfort food. Ham and potatoes in a bowl? That’s like a hug from the inside.
And the nice thing about this soup is that it’s deceptively easy. Sure it looks gorgeous and complicated, but once you cut the veggies and put them on to boil, all you really have to do is make the roux, stir in the milk, and watch the broth go from clear to creamy and delicious.
Throwing this together for a sick friend or a busy weeknight dinner takes all of a half hour, and when you’re done, the result is the best damn healthy ham and potato soup you’ve ever tried.

Easy and Comforting Ham and Potato Soup
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups (about 2 large) russet potatoes, peeled and diced medium
- 1 1/2 cups (9oz) cooked honey ham, diced medium*
- 1/2 cup celery diced small
- 1/2 cup onion diced small
- 4 cups (2 15oz cans) chicken broth
- 5 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup and 1 tablespoon (44g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk, (any percentage)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt
Instructions
Boil
- In a large pot, combine potatoes, ham, celery, onions, and chicken broth. Bring to a low boil and cook over medium heat until vegetables are fork-tender, 10 to 15 minutes.
Make the roux
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and whisk in flour. Cook, stirring constantly until flour is golden, about one minute. Slowly add in milk, continuing to stir so that no lumps form and cook until mixture is thick, about 5 minutes.
Combine
- Pour flour and milk mixture into the soup and stir. Add pepper, and salt to taste.
- Serve and enjoy.
Notes
Nutritional Information
Recipe Adapted From: Allrecipes
Small Batch Instructions: This recipe halves cleanly.
Make-ahead Instructions: Ham, onions, and celery can be cut up to two days in advance. Potatoes should be cut just before cooking to avoid browning.
Freezer Notes: You can freeze this soup–it will keep up to 4 months in the freezer, but I was not a huge fan of the texture of the potatoes once my test batch defrosted. I probably wouldn’t freeze this soup again.
Ali @ Home & Plate says
What a perfect way to use up a sweet holiday ham. This soup looks healthy and the perfect comfort soup for these chilly nights.
Tracy says
Thank you, Ali!
Karen Vogel says
The first time I made this soup it was excellant however, the second time it was watery and I followed recipe. . only variation I made was I did not cook ham and celery and onions together. What do you think happenend?
Tracy says
Hi, Karen, did the not cooking the ham, celery, and onions together change the cooking time? If so, the soup might have been simmering for a shorter period of time and so less water evaporated. The other thing is that you might not have let the roux get thick enough before adding it to the soup (I’ve done this before). You want your roux to be nicely thick and bubbly before adding it to the soup. If it’s not thickened by the time recommended in the recipe, just keep cooking it. Lots of environmental factors affect cooking time, so it may need a little longer on the heat. Hope that helps!!
Bob says
It was tasty but I followed the recipe exactly and the soup was too watery. I like a soup like this to be thick and creamy and it wasn’t close.
Eula says
You’ve given excellent tips and instructions.
Which is sometimes hard to find in these recipes. Thanks
Tracy says
Thanks, Eula!!
Carolyn says

Susan says
Hi Tracy just made your soup a bigger batch but I just added more butter and flour so it could thicken up and another can of broth and broccoli and a cube of bouillon it is Wonderful thanks for sharing. I live in Oregon and it cold perfect day for it.
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Susan! I envy your Oregon soup weather!! It was positively balmy here in SoCal today and not soup weather at all.
Barbara Parkos says
Perfect!
Granny Bea says
Hi Tracy,
Love this recipe and it is so quick and easy. Love all the comments about alternative and “extras” added. I chop about a 1/4 cup of carrots and add to the pot. So Yummy!
Wilma says
I made this with smoked ham and it was delicious!!! Thank You!
Linda Steffen says
I really like this soup, I been wanting to make it for a long time but couldn’t ever fine a good recipe I liked, but I would like it a little less thick so what do u suggest? thanks so much
Diane says
I added some smoked paprika to this soup. Omg, it was wonderful.
Tracy says
Love this idea!!
JoAnn says
You could add a couple tablespoons of additional flour when making the rou. I always add extra. I like thick soups too
susan Fox says
Add some instant potato flakes to thicken.
Kathleen says
Try adding more chicken broth. Sometimes you have to play with it to get the consistency you like. I hope that helps 🙂
KAREN says
My family loves your soup
I do add 1 cup of sharp cheddar cheese
Marie says
I was a little skeptical looking how simple this recipe is and the huge reviews! But! All were right. It’s delicious and quick. I added a little smoked paprika as one review suggested. I’ll keep this One!!
Deborah Harris says
Could corn starch be substituted for flour, to make gluten free?
Clancy says
Haven’t read through all the reviews to see if your question was answered, and I too, want to use corn starch instead of flour. Has anyone tried this substitute? Thanks.
Dawn Mills says
I’ve used Corn starch many times to thicken soup. My husband has Celiac Disease.
Kathy says
Wonderful recipe. I added cheese and it was just so good!!
Tracy says
Thank you, Kathy!!
Wendy says
My whole family loves this delicious, easy soup! I use those ham steaks if I don’t have leftover ham! It works perfectly! We always too with a little shredded cheese. <3 Thanks for this recipe.
Adrianna says
I actually love this recipe… I’m a young adult learning the hard way that cooking isn’t as simple as it seems! This was a great soup for a beginner… the only thing I changed is a added 1/2c of carrots and added some flour into the soup to try and thicken it up. Delicious thank you!!!
DeeDee says
Try using potato flakes instead of flour to thicken.
Lynn Rohde says
Just made today! Yum! Added hidden valley ranch powder!! Awesome! Thank you
Lori Mitchell says
Made this with leftover spiral ham. I substituted cauliflower and carrots for the potatoes and it was delicious!
Cheryl Swaagman says
I made the soup and I added diced carrots and it turned out excellent. A very hearty healthy soup when it is cold outside.
Robert says
It turned out way too watery
Dotty says
This is a delicious soup. Instead of chicken broth I used Better than Bouillon vegetable base. I also ground a tablespoon of peppercorns and added it to the soup. It turned out super thick so I added more milk and oh! I added a cup of frozen corn.
J Reddin says
Love this soup and have made it several times. The last time I. Add it I had a half bag of frozen corn in the freezer and added it towards the end. It was really good and now I do this every time.
Jinni says
This one is a keeper, easy to make and Delish! Thanks for sharing! I added carrots, tyme, garlic salt and onion powder for a little extra flavor.
Tracy says
Glad you enjoyed it, Jinni!
Renz says
This looks so yummy. Chunky goodness. I don’t eat pork so I would have to sub the meat.. but I don’t know if that would be as great.. lol
Tracy says
Thanks, Renz! I’ve never tried it, but I bet this would be pretty good vegetarian. You could add some cheese in there to give it more of a kick without the sweet/salty ham.
Marney says
Add clams
Nancy says
Would be good without ham.
Tracy says
Ham is optional!
Alicia Bojorques says
Hello Tracy and Thank You so much for putting out this recipe,my dad used to make the homemade Potato Soup but he is unable to cook any longer so I decided to learn how to make it myself and I am glad that your recipe was a BIG hit with my family they loved it and now my fiancee wants some for lunch on this cold foggy day while he is at work,so I decided to use the rest of the diced Ham instead of the cubes and it still came out very good
Linda says
I made this soup tonight..I substituted the ham for bacon and added cheese to the rue…delicious!
Killoran says
I don’t eat pigs either, but do eat poultry. (not much of that even, as I learn more and more vegan recipes,) But a smoked turkey drum can be used, and you won’t know the difference. Turkey ‘ham’ also works well with scalloped potatoes, bean soup, pea soup… any place you’d use pork ham. I’ve even used vegan hot dogs, which taste fine, but the texture is a little off. I have a vegan “pork” bullion that I found in an Asian market, and I use it in LOTS of vegan dishes.
Tracy says
This is so helpful. Thanks for sharing!!
Jackie says
Add cheese. I make something very similar to this. I just don’t put as much chicken both. But I put a lot of cheese in it. So mine is more cheesy potato soup lol. It’s really good even without ham. I also throw a little instant potato into it. One time it wasn’t thick enough, so I had to figure out a way to thicken it more. Instant potatoes did the trick. I like my soups really thick.
Jenny says
I bet you could use a smoky-flavored cubed tofu but add it late.
Donna Reale says
Sometimes I use a Halal version of canned meat (similar to Spam) cut into dice. It’s made of chicken and beef and is about half the calories of Spam but still imparts that naughty goodness to the soup. Or yes, you can leave it out altogether or sub something else you like.
Tracy says
This is a great tip! Thanks for sharing!!
Tammy says
It’s good without meat too
Kathy says
Had some ham and potatoes to use up, fabulous recipe – thank you!
Sandy Donais says
Hi Renz; , Sandy here; I was just reading through reviews and saw that you don’t eat pork, I make a corn chowder, with grilled cheese, so you could always do that or try adding a meat you do like, just a thought!!! -SANDY
Caroline says
Smoked turkey would be great!
Marilyn C. says
There is very good turkey bacon for those who do not eat pork. Could crumble cooked bacon on top of bowl of soup for that taste similar to
real bacon..

Low-cal comfort food? I’m sold! Hilarious reference to the campbell’s soup commercial. You’re obviously much nicer than that mom. 😉
Tracy says
Ha, not that much nicer, because I cackle at his pain every single time I see it, and that thing runs constantly. 😉
Susan says
Enjoyed this soup. If too
thin use a little dehydrated potato to thicken.
Tracy says
Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the tip about the potatoes!

How nice that you’re “the soup lady!” I don’t really like that commercial b/c I think it’s sort of mean! Your soup looks delicious! So warm and comforting! I would love a bowl!
Tracy says
Thank you, Patricia! I’m a terrible person, but that’s why I think it’s so funny. His sad, dejected face as he has to make his own soup at the end just sends me into fits of giggles. 😉

Tracy says
I hope you both enjoy it! And congrats on the future grandbaby! 🙂
Taylor says
I’m not big on leaving comments but I just wanted to say that this soup is extremely good! I will state that I added 1 1/2- 2 cups of cheese to mine BUT I also tasted before I added the cheese and the soup alone deserves 5 stars.. I just simply love cheesy soups, and I personally think it just put it over the top! The only other thing I did was I did about 4 cups of potatoes verses 3 1/2 just because I like lots of potatoes!
Thanks soo much for posting
Tracy says
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the soup, and I LOVE the idea of making it cheesy!!
Melissa says
I am so doing this I’m waiting for it all to boil up and then making the roux and can’t wait to add cheese to it because I totally agree cheesy soups make me so happy too! ☺️
Tracy says
Hope you enjoyed the soup, Melissa! And I think I’m going to have to add a cheesy version of this soup to the site since everyone is adding cheese anyway. 😉
Madelaine says
This was so perfect. I needed something hearty and warm for snow day and this really hit the spot. My husband and 3 kids all loved it and I was able to enjoy their company by the fire! I added two Bay leaves and some thyme and garlic powder, then we garnished with cheese and dipped crackers! Thanks for sharing such a delicious recipe!!!
Tracy says
Sounds like perfect way to spend a snow day. I’m so glad you and your family enjoyed it!
Laurie n says
Can you do this in a slow cooker?
Tracy says
Hi Laurie, I’ve never done it, but it would probably work just fine. Instead of simmering the potatoes, ham, celery, onions, and chicken broth together, I’d cook them in the slow cooker for about 3 to 4 hours on high, 6 to 8 on low. You’d still have to make the roux on the stove just before serving and then mix that in with what’s in the slow cooker. If you give it a try, please report back. I’d love to know how it turned out!
Jeff says
Crockpot method works great! Followed your instructions but did wait till toward the end to add my ham as it was already cooked (leftovers). Awesome recipe.
Tracy says
So glad to hear it!!
Wendy says

Alejandra says
i loved how easy this looks. can i use soy milk instead of regular milk?
Tracy says
Hi, Alejandra. I’ve never done it, but it should work. If you try, please let me know how it turns out!
ChristyP. says
Just made this, I was lazy and used 3 1/2 c. frozen potatoes o’brien instead of the potatoes, celery, onion. And I tossed in some chedder cheese at the end…..man it is GOOD!!! I think I found my favorite creamy soup base! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
Tracy says
Thanks, Christy! I’m so glad it worked out for you, and I love your easy spin on it!
Maria says
Did you use the potatoes frozen or thawed? I have a broken arm so can’t chop the potatoes so I would have to use the frozen potatoes o brien. Thanks

This soup is delicious! It doesn’t last very long at our house… My husband complains that he never gets any, so I always double the recipe now. I use a combo of evaporated milk and regular milk. I have even added a couple carrots and a can of corn to add more veggies when doubling the recipe. YUM!!! Thanks so much for the recipe. It is definitely a family favorite.
Tracy says
Yum! I love the idea of adding evaporated milk and extra veggies. Sounds delish! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe, Holly!

I just made this (and finished a bowl… yum!). This recipe is a keeper! So easy, and used up some leftover Christmas ham. I had all the other ingredients on hand. I think it would be delicious even without the ham. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Tracy says
Thanks, Holly! Glad everyone enjoyed it!
Lauren says
This recipe was great! Tasty and not too many ingredients. I didn’t find it necessary to make the rux separate. I sauteed the onions and celery, melted the butter, added the flour. Browned for a minute, then added my liquid and potatoes. Brought to a boil and cooked until potatoes were soft. I think it had the same affect and saved a dish
Tracy says
Good to know on the roux! And I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe. Thanks, Lauren!
Amanda says
Made this soup on this chilly Northern Ontario afternoon. It turned out great! I added diced carrots, corn and a handful of chopped spinach to the soup to add some hidden veggies. Great recipe!

I give it 5 stars.
Tracy says
So glad the fam enjoyed this! Sorry the print function didn’t work for you. I’ll look into it. If you send me an email at [email protected], I’ll send you a PDF of the recipe.
Lorin says
It’s on the stove and smells divine. Keep telling my husband it is not done yet….snowing today and he is so excited to eat this!
Tracy says
Hope you both enjoyed it, Lorin! And totally jealous of your snow. It’s been sunny and 70 here all weekend and I want some cozy soup weather! 😉
Emily says
Do we need to put in the celery and onions??
Tracy says
Hi, Emily. You mean like omit them completely? You can. The soup will still come together without them, but they add flavor and texture to the soup, so I definitely prefer the soup with them, but it’s totally up to you!
Wendy Martin says
Just made this tonight, delicious. I did add 1 cup cheddar cheese and carrots. I used ham I had left over from boiled dinner. I will be making this again!
Tracy says
Carrots and cheddar sound so good in this soup right about now. So glad you enjoyed it, Wendy!
Linz says
Have this soup sounds delicious, but I am wondering could I replace the milk and flour and just use some heavy whipping cream instead?
Tracy says
Hi, Linz. You could definitely give it a try, but the soup will be really rich (2 cups of heavy cream to replace the milk is a lot) and won’t be nearly as thick. Usually potato soups that use heavy cream instead of a roux also have you puree at least part of the vegetables, which helps thicken it. If you do try, please let me know how it turns out!
Hillary says
Well I’ve had a hankering for potato & ham soup & yours sounded yummy so I went for it. I did make a few additions along the way (as is my custom) & ended up with a crazy-good chowderish version. I added a finely diced carrot, a little garlic, some cheese to the roux &, tossed in a can of cream corn that’s been gathered dust for longer than I care to admit.
I was aiming for a thick & chunky soup so I reserved most of the ham &, while making the roux, I removed several ladles of veggies, gave the remaining soup a good once over with my trusty immersion blender then added the reserved ham, veggies, creamed corn &, of course, the roux.
It turned out scrumptious. Thanks for the inspiration, even if I did end up wandering off the recipe.
Tracy says
LOL, I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe AND made it your own! Thanks for taking the time to comment, Hillary. 🙂
Shan says
Made this soup today. I stuck pretty true to the recipe, but added thinly sliced carrots. What delicious flavor! Will def make again. I have to laugh… looks like you posted this recipe a few years ago, and it’s still a hit!!! Thank you for sharing.
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed the soup, Shan! And yes, this one has just gotten more and more popular with age, which makes me so happy, because I love it and love sharing it with people. 😉
Alicia says
Ok, I have to be honest here. I truly did not expect this soup to turn out this good!! Let me explain…I came across your website and this recipe because I was looking for something quick to feed my family with few ingredients. I thought okay this looks too damn easy to be that good! Well slap me silly because I am completely blown away by the flavor of this soup! This soup looks beautiful and taste like something you would get a fancy restaurant! My 11-year-old said this is the best soup I have ever made! Karma game strong! Hahahaha Thank you!!!

Thanks, Kim! I’m so happy you enjoyed it!
Cynthia says
This soup was AWESOME!! My family loved it. I was lucky to even get a little of it for lunch the next day. I did have a question…how much is a serving. Counting calories here and just need that little tidbit of info. Thank you for the recipe!!
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Cynthia!! This soup makes 5 servings, but I’ve never measured its volume, so I don’t know in cups exactly how much a serving is. What I do when I’m counting is dish all 5 servings up at once and just make sure all the bowls get the same amount of soup. Hope that helps!
Lisa says
This is the BEST, most velvety cream soup I have ever made. Absolutely delicious! Very easy to make. My husband LOVED IT!
Tracy says
Thanks, Lisa! So happy to hear you both enjoyed it!
Angela Pooser says
This is one of my go to recipes! love this soup.
Tracy says
This makes me so happy to hear. Thanks, Angela!
Amanda says
Wow, I actually made this and it came out great! I made it with more potatoes but the same amount of roux, so it’s rather chunky but I like that. I also added a can of whole corn and a can of green beans. I suppose you could also add carrots but I left that off. Or add a can of mixed vegetables to make things even easier. Either way, I woke up not feeling the greatest today but I’m already on cloud nine with my success of this and I have you to thank for that so thank you 🙂
Now, I’m going to try my hand at making beer bread for the first time to complete out the meal my mom frequently made for us 🙂
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Amanda! And beer bread sounds amazing. Good luck!

This soup was so yummy! I even added some cheese to the roux before putting that into the soup. Then I added some sour cream to the soup as well. Delicious!

Nadine says

EmFos says
Delicious!!! I used beef broth because I didn’t have chicken, and added half a can of corn because I love corn. Thanks for a delicious recipe.
Alison says
This is on the stove simmering right now, but the taste I got was wonderful! I added corn to the mix and used heavy cream in the roux to make it extra creamy. Also added some Cajun seasoning. Can’t wait to have on this chilly cloudy day!
Tracy says
Mmmm, heavy cream is always an excellent addition to soup! Love the idea of adding some Cajun seasoning as well. Hope you enjoyed it!
Carole says
Added some dill, carrots, mushrooms and frozen peas.
Tracy says
Great additions!
Teresa says
Tried it tonight. Was delicious! I added a bay leaf while cooking and corn at the end. We’ll be adding this to our rotation!
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Teresa!
Sherry says
This soup is amazing to say the least. I doubled up on everything to make a bigger amount. Also added corn, sour cream. It was so so delicious. Thank you for sharing your recipe! ☺
Tracy says
Mmmm, love that you added sour cream! So glad you enjoyed the soup, Sherry!
Patricia says
I made this…..just omitted celery but it was great..
Tracy says
Thanks, Patricia!
Crystal says
Made this tonight. Added real bacon bits and used salt free chicken broth. Hubby and I loved it ❤️
Tracy says
So happy your husband enjoyed it!
Jillian says
Can I make this in the Crock-Pot?
Tracy says
I haven’t done it, but it would probably work just fine. Just cook the potatoes, ham, celery, onions, and chicken broth together in the slow cooker for 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 on low. Then make the roux on the stove and add it in at the end. Hope that helps!
Emilie says
This was delicious!!!
Think it could be made with unsweetened almond milk as well?
Tracy says
Thanks, Emilie! I haven’t tried this with almond milk, so I can’t 100% say for certain, but I think it would work just fine. If you try it, please let me know how it turns out!
Pinkie says
I made this last night, and it was absolutely delicious. To save time, I bought pre-chopped trinity mix at the grocery store (onion/celery/bell pepper). The pepper was great in it. My husband ate four bowls. This is definitely going into my regular rotation.
Tracy says
Thanks, Pinkie! I haven’t seen that combo around here. I’ll have to keep an eye open for it, because it seems like a great way to keep things simple!
Bonnie says
Wonderful!!! Made my husband very happy, and I’ve made it several times this winter already. I did add more potatoes, a little larger. Thanks for this recipe.
Tracy says
So happy to hear, Bonnie!
KB says
Doubled the recipe, found pre-cut potatoes in the freezer isle, and pre-cubed ham at the deli! It took me 5 minutes to throw together, and now it is in the crockpot keeping warm. Smells delicious and I can’t wait to try it!
Tracy says
Hope you enjoyed it!
Brittany says
Any idea what kind of fat grams is in this recipe? I am on a low calorie low fat diet

Amber says
I made this the other night and it was a hit. Great recipe and so easy to make! Thank you!
Melissa Cooper says
This was a BIG HIT for my family! I made it per instructions but added some broccoli. It’s rare in my house that EVERYONE likes the same thing. Got requests for this to be added to the “rotation”! That’s the highest honor in my house! Thanks for sharing!
Tracy says
I love the idea of adding broccoli!! So glad everyone enjoyed it, Melissa!!
Kim says
Delicious soup! I made it as written except I added rivels. Even my picky eater son loved it! Thanks for the recipe.
Kathy says
Yummy and so easy to make
Tracy says
Thanks Kathy! So glad you enjoyed it!
Pat says
Didn’t see this question…can I use low-fat milk and if I do, will soup curdle?
Tracy says
Low-fat or non-fat milk works just fine. Since you’re making a roux first and not boiling the milk directly in the soup, you don’t need to worry about it curdling.
MARIE says
Just something to try … when adding milk to any recipe, heat it in the microwave first. I almost always use skim milk in recipes but if you add it cold, it WILL curdle. You want the milk to be close to the temp of what you are adding it to, then add it slowly as you wisk it in to incorporate it to your mixture.
Pat says
Thanks, Tracy. The soup is delicious and no curdling! I added cheddar cheese to the flour mixture and corn and creamed corn to the soup. Really good!!
Tracy says
So glad to hear it! Thanks for reporting back!
Shawn says
I follow every recipe to the letter the first time I make it. That way, if I feel like it needs more salt, adding anything I can tweak it after that.
My family loved it, just the way you have it. I saw comments saying others added sour cream and corn, etc. which could be great additions as well. I have added your recipe to our after holiday meal favorites (what to do with Leftover holiday ham).
**Note: 1- 1 1/4 tsp. salt was found to be great for us in this recipe. ❤️
Tracy says
Thanks, Shawn! I’m so thrilled to hear the family enjoyed it!
Anna says
I come from a family of soup lovers. So it is fair to say that some of us have become quite picky. This soup was a hit with everyone. And so easy to make. It has become the go to when I don’t know what to make for dinner. I do sometimes change it up a bit by adding different veggies. And still it is always good. Thanks for putting it out there.
Tracy says
Thank you, Anna! So glad the family enjoys it!
Hailey says
It’s so great! I switched out the ham and potatoes for broccoli and carrots to make broccoli soup with this and it’s still great!
Tracy says
Oooo, I love that idea!!
Hailey says
I used a little chicken bouillon cube with water because I didn’t have chicken broth and it worked just as well.
Juanita says
I made this today for my husband – he hated it. I made the rue and had the potatoes separate and the rue looked great – thick but then added to the potatoes, onions, celery and carrots in the chicken broth, then it was too thin?? If I make this again, i will make it all in the rue and add chicken broth as needed. 🙁 was very disappointed.
Tracy says
Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it, Juanita!
Jackie says
Can I use heavy cream instead of milk? Any suggestions? Has anyone used almond milk?
Tracy says
Heavy cream will make a *very* rich and creamy soup, but I have had people tell me they’ve done it and really enjoyed it!
Amanda Peterson says
Wow! I wasn’t expecting it to be that good. Excellent recipe!
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Amanda!!
Debbie says
My husband loved this recipe! The only change I made was to use celery flakes in place of celery. We like the flavor but not the texture of celery. Thanks for a wonderful recipe that helped me use up leftover Christmas ham!
Tracy says
So glad to hear it, Debbie!!
Gloria Gauntt says
Love this recipe! I wanted to make potato soup today, but my only recipe calls for a can of potato soup, which I didn’t have so I used your recipe. I did take a short cut (based on my original recipe) by using about half a package of Potatoes O’Brien (as someone above did also). I microwaved them in two batches for 5-7 minutes each, then added the remainder of the ingredients. I did not make the roux, instead after adding the milk I added instant potatoes, 1/4 c. at a time, to thicken the soup to the desired consistency. And I added fresh spinach because I had some that needed to be used up. Served with garlic bread sticks made with hot dog buns, butter and garlic powder. Awesome meal — lunch and supper. Thank you. Loved all the reviews and the idea of adding a lot of vegetables to make a potato-veggie soup.
Leah says
Delicious! Great use of leftover ham! We added a bay leaf and some dill with shredded cheddar cheese on top! Turned out great!
Tracy says
So happy you enjoyed it, Leah!!
Kristi Karcher says

Mel says
We loved this soup! I always make a recipe the way it is written and then change things if we feel it needs it. This soup is perfect just the way it is! I’ll make it again, just this way! Thank you very much for an easy, delicious recipe!
Jean says
Made this and its amazing!!! But we noticed it tasted almost like clam chowder which we adore. We have made this 3 times this week. But we had two crock pots going one with ham and one with clams! So good thank you thank you even my kids love it!
Sep says
This recipe is a new favorite in my house. I add a few extra veggies to it and it is so good.

Zarah says
Made this for dinner tonight. It was quick and easy. We loved it. Will definitely make again.
Sarah says
My husband LOVED this soup! I added 1.5-2 cups of cheese to the thickened milk mixture, making a cheese sauce before adding it to the rest of the soup. It was perfect!
Jamie says
This left a lot to be desired. Very bland as written-I had to make a lot of adjustments.
Tracy says
Bummer to hear you didn’t enjoy it, Jamie!
Peggy says
I live in Florida where it is seldom cool enough to warrant a warm bowl of soup! I make it anyway and this was delicious! I took some of the comments to heart regarding the soup being too watery. I cut the chicken broth down to 3 cups. I monitored the pot to be certain the veggies were not boiling dry. I also added an extra tablespoon of flour when I made the roux and cooked it until almost the consistency of mayonnaise! Soup was perfect for us!
Tracy says
Thanks for the detailed comment! So glad the soup worked out for you!!
Veda says
This recipe was so easy & so delicious! I was looking for something to make with leftover ham & didn’t want the usual ham bone soup when I saw this. Omg, I’m so glad I did! I doubled the recipe to have leftovers. I also substituted peppered gravy (2 packs) for the butter & flour & I’m sure it didn’t make a difference. Even if it did my husband loved it! Thank you for a great, easy recipe!
Nikki Englerth says
This soup was delicious! It turned out thick and creamy. I added fresh green beans because I had them and 1 cup of shredded cheddar jack cheese. This recipe is a keeper….thank you!
Tracy says
Oooo, cheddar jack sounds like such a good addition!!
Chelsea says
Really impressed with this soup! My stepdad made a ham for New Year’s and it was a huge ham! So I got left overs too. I didn’t change a thing about this recipe and I’m very happy with how it turned out. I did use 1/2 c half and half and 2 1/2 c almond milk.
Reita Beck says
Wow – This is the best Potato and Ham Soup!!! Easy to make and the flavor is awesome!! Thank you! This is a keeper!!! Reita

Dena Batchelor says
My guys love this recipe! It is on the keeper list for sure. I have made it several times and they love it. Thanks for sharing.
Nita says
Made your soup and it truly is the best. Would it thicken if I substitute half-n-half for the roux ?
Tracy says
It would be a little thicker and a lot richer with half and half instead of milk.
Katie says
I made this and added a bay leaf, garlic, and some cheddar cheese-looks and smells delicious. Going to serve with crusty bread.
Lace says
My husband didn’t care for ham so I substituted cooked bacon and it is a huge hit with my family. Also topped bowls with a little cheese, sour cream and green onion! Love it!
shirley says
Very good soup I used instant potatoes in potato soup makes excellent thickener .Thanks for great recipe!
Erica Craig says
This soup was amazing! So simple and my family LOVES it! So glad I found this recipe! I leave out the celery because of picky kids but otherwise they love it. I top the bowls with shredded cheese and its wonderful! Thanks so much!
Tracy says
So glad the family enjoyed it, Erica!!
Sarah clark says
I really love this recipe. I did alter it. I followed everything except for the roux and added a chicken boullion cube with the broth. For the roux I did 1 1/2 whole milk and 1/2 heavy whipping cream. I added a good dash of cayenne pepper, seasoned salt, pepper, creole and 2 dashes of smoked paprika. (This is the blend of seasonings i make my baked mac and cheese roux with. I also add 2 table spoons of sweetened condensed milk.)And 8 ounces of cheddar cheese. I recommend this if you like thick and hearty soups. I don’t like mine watery. I also added a bunch more ham. I had a small shoulder and just threw in as much as I could. You can never go wrong with more meat
Tracy says
Interesting! This recipe gets a lot of modifications, but I’ve never had anyone add condensed milk before. So glad you enjoyed the recipe, and I totally agree with you about more meat. 🙂
Pat says
I would like to use a ham bone to start. How would you suggest I modify the recipe? Thank you!
marcia says
I just made this today and doubled the recipe. It’s fantastic! This will be added to my recipe box for future use. It’s really simple with basic on hand ingredients. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. That’s a great option.
mar-cee-ah says
I love this soup. I made it exactly according to directions and it was easy. This will be added to my soup rotation.. Thanks for the wonderful recipe.
Laura says
I found this recipe last year in the spring, using up the last of our Easter Ham. It was absolutely so simple and tasted AMAZING!!! It’s finally getting cold again, and my family immediately requested this soup. It’s so comforting. Plus, unlike Chili, it leaves your tummy alone
Thank you so much for the recipe. New family staple- BIG WIN! 5+++ stars
Kelly says
I added about 4 ounces of cream cheese and about a cup or so of medium cheddar cheese when adding in the milk. Also a teaspoon of garlic powder is good in potato soup.
Rebecca says
Very good!! Thanks! Easy and delicious.
Bethany says
Made this for dinner with grilled cheese sandwiches and it was delicious! Definitely will add to my recipes but will add more potatoes but that is my families preference.
Brody says
Can you use Ham stock instead of Chicken stock ?
June says
I LOVED this soup!!! The only problem was I loved it so much, I didn’t share it with my granddaughters. When I make a pot of soup, I usually double the recipe and share it with my daughter and her family. This time I had all the ingredients, but not enough potatoes to double the recipe. I’ll know better next time. I think I’ll add leeks next time as that sounds delicious. THANK YOU for sharing your recipe.
BTW, thank you for not having all those annoying pop-up advertisements. Some websites have so many you can only see an inch or so of the recipe at a time.
Rhonda says
This soup is absolutely delicious. I added a good tsp of parsley, onion flakes instead of onion and I added 3/4 cup of carrots
I am addicted to this soup now. Thanks for sharing
Kim from California says
Excellent and very easy to make
Rachel says
So yummy! My family loved it.
How much is a serving?
Alice says
I made this yesterday, I didn’t change a thing. I did add a tablespoon of flour to the soup and threw a handful of cheddar cheese in the soup to help thicken it. My husband loved it as did I. Oddly amazing without any spices. Shared the recipe with some friends.
Amy Kay says
Instant potatoes work well if you have watery soup … do same thing with beef stew or split pea soup … i learned that as a kid when i was learning to cook work’s awesome
Sandy says
Made this with leftover Easter ham. It was delicious and easy!
Raquel says
So freaking good! I’ve made it several times and the whole family loves it. I cook it quite a bit longer so everything gets soft, and I definitely add more of all of the ingredients—I even add some canned sliced potatoes to thicken it up a bit. Delicious—thank you for an easy crowd pleaser!
Britney says
This recipe seemed worthy of using my first-ever batch of homemade chicken broth from a carcass and veggie scraps, and it SO was. I was pleased to skip the usual step of sautéing veggies and it worked out perfectly! Served with corn muffins with corn in them. Mmmmm. So glad there’s leftovers (I loosely doubled it)!
Terri says
This soup is amazing and a monthly request in my house no matter what the temp is outside. Paired with crusty bread and it’s an easy dinner
Laura Lindstrom says
I made this with a few tweaks (because I didn’t have exactly what it called for) and it was delicious! I seared some bone-in pork chops, then diced and cooked. I removed them from the dutch oven, sauteed the onions, then added the pork, potatoes and broth. I also added some rosemary, sage, and smoked bacon sea salt.
Tracy says
So happy it worked out for you. Your version sounds delish!
Kellie says
Oh my… this is my favorite recipe for this soup. I added a few handfuls of cheese to the rue…. This is a keeper
Tracy says
So glad you enjoyed it, Kellie!
